We had the privilege of an exclusive interview with Sulem Urbina, unbeaten flyweight prospect from Mexico.

FN247:
What was family life like growing up and what inspired you to get into boxing?
SU:
I come from a very humble home my family and I immigrated to the United States from Mexico. We didn’t have much but we were always together and that made the difference. My family is a huge boxing fan family we’d all get together around the neighbourhood on ppv events and do cookouts. One day my older brothers started attending a local boxing club and I tagged along.
FN247:
What amateur gym did you fight with and what where your amateur highlights?
SU: I decided to attend Knockout boxing club because they had the best team in the state. I had 96 amateur fights was a 4 time Mexican national champion. Competed on the international level from 2009-2016 won silver at Central American Games, qualified for youth Pan Am Games and Participant in America’s Olympic Qualifier.
FN247:
You are considered one of the best prospects in female boxing with a record now of 12-0. Once all gets back to normal after the pandemic when would you feel like you are ready to make the step up and fight for a world championship? SU:
When things get back to normal I would like to have a couple of 8 round fights then go for a title but if a big opportunity comes I am sure I will take it FN247:
You are highly ranked in the governing bodies - which of the world champions would you like a shot at first? SU:
I am Mexican, like every Mexican boxer we love the Green Belt and it would be my honor to fight for and win that title.
FN247:
It is a strange time for all at the moment - are you finding it difficult to keep up with your training schedule? SU:
It is very difficult to train at the moment I believe I am doing as best as possible not having all the equipment available I need but I’m trying to stay busy by running a bit and doing pad work with my husband who is also my coach FN247:
Women's boxing in recent years has reached new levels of appreciation by the wider boxing audience with top fighters like Clarissa Shields and our own Katie Taylor. There is a lot of debate going on at the moment who is the best pound for pound female boxer on the planet is, who in your opinion is the number 1 at the moment? SU:
It’s very tough Claressa Shields and Katie Taylor have both done amazing but my number one would be Amanda Serrano she has been around longer and has dominated and has been world champion in 7 divisions.
FN247:
In the next 12 months where would you like to see your career? And finally is there anything you would like to add? In the next year I’d like to be a world champion unifying and trying to become undisputed world champion. Thank you to everyone that follows women’s boxing and thank you to all the media that gives us and dedicates time to our careers. We have to keep on pushing and promoters have to keep promoting us on major cards to keep evolving in this sport.
